Registering a domain name is just step one in the many steps needed to begin branding your business. You may decide that you will first want to establish and build your web site. Although this too is important, make sure that in the long run you don't omit this very important step; as not only does it aid in the branding process, it also establishes professionalism.

For more information regarding what is involved in the process of choosing a web host, read the web sites web hosting article: Site Builders vs. HTML online at: http://www.DocumentsCentral.com/Article24.html

Getting Started...

Your domain name should be a direct extension to your business name and/or your products and services line(s). Keeping that in mind, there are a few questions you should ask yourself first before beginning the registration process.

For instance: Do you want to include your business name? Do you want your domain name to reflect your products and services line? Or are you simply publishing a sales site (mini-site) for your new e-book, manual, report, newsletter or e-zine?

Once you've decided on your objective and have a general idea of what you will be publishing on your web site, you can then begin the process of registering your domain name and seeking a web host.

Keeping it Simple...

The choices in domain registrars are many, will range from $8.95 to $35.00 yearly, should be ICANN accredited and will include everything from the simple registration to a one-site plan for registration, hosting, e-commerce, and e-zine or newsletter publishing.

There is not enough room in this article to include all of the above details, as you may eventually decide that you will want to purchase these items separately; in a web based plan, the software or even scripts installed upon your existing web site. It is the web sites personal recommendation that a plan including one site hosting, e-commerce, e-zine or newsletter publishing with all domain registration kept entirely separate is the best.

Why? Because at some future date, you may decide to move, make changes etc. As you will no doubt find when you enter your domain registration details, keeping it separate will only involve changing the web hosts information, instead of your entire business and web site plan.

There are many domain registrars available on the web today. The two most economical and the simplest to work with are what is listed here today. Each will allow you the option of short and long term plans, with the added bonus of an increased savings for each additional year purchased. They are:

Conclusions...

You will also no doubt find that the whole experience will be a learning experience. Choose your options carefully. Think back to when you first decided that you wanted to work independently. Remember that feeling of excitement. Let it carry you through and be very patient as this is one area that trial and error can prevail.
