If you have been online any time at all, you have probably used an online dictionary site like Dictionary.com. If you don't know how to spell a word well enough for spell check to offer you the right suggestion, this site can come up with more alternative words for you then a lot of spell checkers. (And I know everyone uses spell check before they send or publish anything right?) But this site also has many other uses, that you might not have thought of.
Unfortunately in the English language there are many words that sound alike, but what it means is dependent upon which spelling you use. To, too and two all have their place. They're going to have a party at their house when they get there, is another example.
As the web is world wide, grasping of the different spellings for those who first language is not English can be difficult. Heck, it's not easy for someone like me whose motto has always been: I have a hard enough time with English, why would I want to mess up another language?
Spell check will make suggestions, but only if a word is not recognized. If you type there, but their is more appropriate, you have to hope that the grammar check catches it. But if you know a word has several means, you can use the dictionary to spell out the meanings. This way you know you are using the correct spelling and getting the message across that you want the reader to have.
I use the thesaurus there as much as I do the dictionary. Here is a couple of examples of how you can put this site to work for you in your online life.
You have decided to get into niche marketing. You have a topic in mind and you're ready to purchase the wonderful domain name you have come up with. Except that when you go to register the domain, you find out someone else already has HugeCookbookResaleRights.com. You really wanted something that created the picture of huge, but with resale rights in it.
You can go with a .net or .biz if they are available. But most marketers are in agreement that .com is the best route. You can try adding dashes between the words to see if that is available. But the reality is, even if someone remembers your domain name, they usually won't remember the dashes and instead will end up at your competitor's site.
Enter the thesaurus at Dictionary.com. Type in huge in the search box. Click thesaurus. Presto! You have a whole list of words that mean the same thing as huge, to paint the picture you want. What about ColossalCookbookResaleRights.com or EnormousCookbookResaleRights.com?
You can do the same thing if you find that everything with resale is taken, as it is such a popular word to use in a domain name. You could go with HugeCookbookReleaseRights.com that comes up on the thesaurus when you type in resale.
I also use the thesaurus when I am writing web sales copy or ads. You want to suggest that a user puts a suggestion link on their site. That doesn't flow. Type in suggest, click thesaurus, and you have 72 ways to say suggest.
We all know that repeat exposure is what makes sales on the Internet, whether it is seeing an ad repeatedly or reading sales copy several times. You want to expose potential customers with the same message, without dulling their brain out, reading the same thing over and over again.
When you send out the second ad or state the goal for the second time on your website, instead of saying "envision your goal" you can put conceive, construct, conceptualize. You are creating the same image in their mind without boring them to death. This also can turn a worn out ad, into something you can reuse, without having to totally rewrite it from scratch.
Dictionary.com is a site that I have bookmarked and use on a regular basis. It never ceases to amaze me the free tools that one can find on the Internet and use to help build an online business. Take advantage of this site and see if you can come up with other uses for it as well.
